First Meetings to Full Engagement: Union Capital’s Path for New Members

At Union Capital, becoming a new member goes beyond simple enrollment. Membership means gaining access to new resources, fostering relationships, and growing within a community that accepts everyone. Through involvement, members can create meaningful and lasting connections, while also expanding their networks, building new skills, and developing support systems.

Navigating these opportunities can feel overwhelming at first. That is why Union Capital’s New Member Committee is dedicated to providing guidance, and helping new members to be fully engaged. This committee encourages new members to download the app, follow social media accounts, participate in events, and track attendance. These steps not only foster deeper community involvement, but also allow members to earn monetary rewards.

Shondell Davis, Union Capital Network Coordinator

As Shondell Davis, leader of the New Member Committee, explains: “Stay as connected as possible with the organization.” She emphasizes that beyond the rewards, Union Capital provides critical social connections and resources that support individuals during life's ups and downs. Through membership, no one will be left behind in times of need, and every success is shared and celebrated.

Network Coordinator Maria Vargas builds on Shondell's experience, explaining a desire for the Union Capital community to continue to grow and support more members. However, many people are still unaware of the resources available or feel too intimidated to ask questions. She believes that increasing awareness and encouraging curiosity can open doors to valuable opportunities. Vargas encourages new members to explore these experiences early on and seek out opportunities for involvement. She adds, “Everyone is welcome at Union Capital. We are one big family, ready to receive you with open arms.”

Beyond the New Member Committee, what draws people to Union Capital is a deep sense of belonging. For many members, Union Capital breaks down previous barriers to building relationships and meeting new people. Davis shares her experience prior to Union Capital involvement stating, “I wasn't someone who knew neighbors, and Union Capital helped me meet them.” This sense of community transforms Union Capital from simply a resource center into a place where individuals feel genuinely seen and heard. Members are not just participants, but rather active contributors, shaping the community in their own positive ways.

This network of contributors extends to individuals of many backgrounds. Union Capital embraces diversity, with members representing a variety of identities. Vargas cites how Union Capital supported her in adjusting to American life after first moving from the Dominican Republic: “When I first arrived I didn’t know any English. In my country, these types of services don’t exist and therefore I didn’t know to be looking for them. I was introduced to the organization through Higher Ground, a program at my children’s school. From the very beginning, I felt supported and embraced. Union Capital welcomed me and made me feel like family.” Furthermore, Union Capital works diligently to accommodate language differences, offering interpretation and Spanish-speaking meetings. Vargas emphasized Union Capital’s consistent efforts to bridge language gaps and ensure that everyone remains connected and supported.

In addition to building an inclusive community and providing access to valuable resources, Union Capital also serves as a vital safety net for many of its members. The organization’s impact often becomes most visible during life’s most difficult moments. Davis shared a deeply personal story of family tragedy. In that painful time, Union Capital offered quiet, unwavering support. From Davis’ perspective “Union Capital is not about recognition, it’s just about being there.” The support Davis experienced during her time of need reinforced that Union Capital is not just about programming. This organization and community genuinely cares for all members.

What makes Union Capital particularly unique is its emphasis on empowerment and giving back to the community. Rather than offering one-way support, the organization encourages members to be leaders and share their voices. Davis shared her story in planning her son's memorial. Union Capital did not overstep with their involvement or take over the event planning. Instead Union Capital supported Davis in creating an event that allowed for joy and healing. The organization fosters personal growth, leadership, and resilience – qualities that continue to benefit members outside of Union Capital events.

Davis perfectly summarizes, “Union Capital provides members with a community of great people full of love and support, allowing you to advocate, be heard, and do it on your own. Union Capital allows you to truly learn and take these resources and skills with you in all life experiences. You are recognized for what you bring and the questions you ask, Union Capital gives all a voice.”
