Dana-Farber: Partner Organization Shoutout
The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is one of Union Capital’s most enduring and impactful partner organizations. Together, they work to bridge gaps in cancer care and education, fostering a shared commitment to equity and community empowerment.
"In addition to Dana-Farber's work on cancer research, there are also the institute's core values; our commitment to community. Our focus is on, ‘how can we bring our work to the folks who need it most,’ and’ how can we ensure everybody has equitable access to the work we do as an institute." Devan Carr, Education & Outreach Program Manager at Dana-Farber.
Dana-Farber’s mission is both ambitious and compassionate: to deliver expert, equitable care to individuals and families affected by cancer while advancing the understanding, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and eventual cure of the disease. A cornerstone of their approach is ensuring marginalized communities are actively included in research efforts and have access to quality cancer care. At Dana-Farber, the vision is clear—a future free from the burdens cancer places on individuals and society.
The partnership with Union Capital amplifies this mission, enabling both organizations to thrive. Dana-Farber connects with local communities through Union Capital’s network, fostering engagement with members who are eager for education and resources.
“We’ve developed a really powerful relationship. Through Union Capital, we can ask, ‘What does the community want to learn about?’” said Carr.
A vital part of Dana-Farber’s work lies in reducing cancer risks in underserved communities through education and resource-sharing. This aligns seamlessly with their core values, particularly their dedication to equity and social justice.
On April 3, 2025, Dana-Farber and Union Capital co-hosted “Faces of Faith,” a virtual celebration of cancer survivors from local communities. This event created a platform for survivors to share their stories, offering inspiration, resilience, and hope. It also emphasized the strength found in faith and connection during challenging times.
“One thing I really like about UCB is how they balance the virtual and in-person, it’s important to appreciate the increased accessibility. We’ve learned so much from UCB and through this partnership,” said Carr.
Dana-Farber’s ability to host both in-person and virtual events is a testament to the synergy between the two organizations. Union Capital’s support ensures these events remain accessible, especially to community members who may face barriers to attending in person but are eager to learn about cancer care and prevention. Dana-Farber has done surveys through Union Capital, has created focus groups, and has fostered a community of trust, respect, interest and care with Union Capital.
Moreover, Dana-Farber highlights the importance of cancer screenings as a vital form of self-care. By educating communities about the benefits of regular screenings, they help dismantle stigmas and encourage proactive health measures.
“It’s been really amazing, over the years we’ve just developed a really good relationship [UC and Dana-Farber] where it becomes very bi-directional. On one hand, our team looks at local cancer data and think ‘where do we see the cancer disparities, what topics should we focus on,’ on the other hand, we like going to UCB to ask, ‘what does the community want to learn more about?' Then making decisions from there." said Carr.
This collaboration between Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Union Capital showcases the transformative power of partnerships, driving meaningful change in the lives of individuals and communities alike. Together, they are building a brighter, more equitable future.
