Meet Elsa Flores: East Boston Network Manager
Originally from El Salvador, Elsa worked as a teacher for 11 years before moving to the United States. Her initial visit was to reunite with her husband and family, but her time in the U.S. evolved into an inspiring story of growth, resilience, and community impact.
Becoming a Leader at UC
Elsa’s love for education and community engagement has been a lifelong passion. After arriving in the U.S., she immersed herself in learning English and continued her involvement in education. During the pandemic, Elsa participated in a program teaching Spanish as a second language to students from 2nd to 8th grade.
“For me, supporting children’s lives outside their homes is essential. Community engagement is a way to provide that extra layer of support they need.”
Ten years ago, Union Capital was seeking a community leader in East Boston. Elsa’s friend recommended her for the role, recognizing her reputation as a respected and proactive leader in the Boston community. Elsa joined Union Capital as a Diamond Leader, a position now referred to as Network Coordinator.
In her early days with UC, Elsa learned extensively about Boston’s neighborhoods and the importance of grassroots engagement.
“Union Capital not only offered me opportunities to grow professionally as a leader but also influenced my personal growth. The resources and connections are infinite at UC.”
Last year, in July, Elsa transitioned from a volunteer to a staff member. “UC is like my second family now,” she said. As East Boston Network Manager, Elsa leads a team of five people, coordinating monthly Network Nights, organizing community outreach, and fostering a welcoming space for all members.
Elsa’s work at Union Capital reflects her commitment to building bridges in the community.
Her monthly Network Nights, held primarily in Spanish, bring together a lot of people who connect, share, and support each other. Elsa ensures these events are inclusive, offering assistance to non-Spanish speakers to make everyone feel welcome.
In addition to hosting events, Elsa participates in food distribution every Thursday at the East Boston Neighborhood Health Center. She also organizes tabling presentations to promote Union Capital’s mission and attract new members.
Why Union Capital?
“Union Capital is my whole life,” Elsa said.
Her values align deeply with UC’s mission of love, support, and resource-sharing. “The support UC provides is incredibly powerful,” she added.
For Elsa, the joy of seeing members connect and thrive is the highlight of her role. “I love our Network Nights,” she said. “Members often call me beforehand, excited to attend. Knowing that people feel welcomed and supported brings me so much happiness.”
Elsa’s story is a testament to the power of community and the difference one dedicated leader can make. From her beginnings as an educator in El Salvador to her current role as East Boston Network Manager, Elsa continues to inspire and uplift those around her. Through her leadership, Union Capital’s values of connection and support are brought to life in East Boston.
